LOST IN MEMORIES & SAMMIE PICKETT [PRINCESS CUP Wk/O]
SPEAK EASY & JOHNNY GARNER
Emma pranced excitedly out onto the track, followed closely by two year old Sonny. Johnny pressed Sonny into a steady canter and Emma and Sammie followed straight away, as she always liked to be with the other horses, running in the centre of the pack or at the back. The pair cantered side by side around the bend, and the plans was as soon as they approached the long side; the riders would urge them into gallop and complete 4 furlongs for their Stakes races workouts. Emma was entered in the Princess Cup, on the road to the Turf Triple Tiara, while Sonny was entered in the Prince Henry Stakes at The Wire.
The straight fast approached and Sonny took the lead to start off. Emma held strongly at his hind quarters and settled quietly into a powerful, rhythmic gallop. Sonny put himself into a steady gallop and settled nicely on the inner rail. Emma snorted loudly, her hooves beat evenly on the dirt, doing a great job even though her surface preferences were Turf.
Sonny and Emma quickened their paces as they came to the two furlong marker. Emma began edging up Sonny's side slightly. A quick glance to the side was flashed by Sonny; he began to try to quicken his speed a little. But not too much; he needed strength for the closing furlong to finish off. Emma easily caught up to Sonny and began to breeze past him.
Emma looked energetic and determined. She focused on running the last furlong. She had grown up a lot in the past year and Carter really thought that this could be her year to do something and prove herself. Sonny struggled behind at Emma's quarters trying to keep up. Emma reached out with her legs, tearing up the ground and covering it in no time at all. She raced past the four furlong marker and energy to do it again. Sonny galloped in a few lengths behind; mad at himself for not beating the mare. He sometimes forgot he was only 2 years old, and he had a while to get his fitness and stamina up for the longer races. Johnny patted the bay colt, not angry at his performance. Emma had a lot more track experience than the colt and the fact he kept up with the little mare was all the reassurance Johnny needed. On the other hand, Sammie was pleased with the mare, knowing that her upcoming performance would hopefully be good, even if her competition was tough.
